Shamanic Journeying: A Beginners Guide
Soul Retrieval: Mending the Fragmented Self
Shamanism is our oldest spiritual system used for healing, problem-solving
and improving the well-being of individuals and their communities. The
shaman is a walker between worlds and, in tribal cultures, serves as healer,
seer, spiritual adviser and dream interpreter. Working with compassionate
spirit allies, the shaman undertakes ecstatic shamanic journeys into the
mystical worlds of the hidden universe in order to help others.
As we in the modern world are called to reconnect with our own
spiritual resources for inspiration, healing and wisdom, it is important to
remember that our ancestors on all inhabited continents once thrived in
the embracing circle of shamanism. We are not alone. Whether aware of
it or not, we each have spirit teachers, power animals and other helpers
who guide and empower our lives from the unseen realms.
From the earliest times art has been used to express the inner life and
to depict shamanic experiences, the invisible worlds and particular helping
spirits. The Shaman: Spirit Walker 2011 calendar offers a wide range of
insightful and inspiring quotes paired with the shamanistic art of Meinrad
Craighead, Bonnie Bisbee, Cathy McClelland and Mark Wagner. The art
and text have been carefully selected and paired by Beth Beurkens, M.A.
Beurkens has been a teacher of shamanism for seventeen years and a
vision quest guide for 21 years. She is a faculty member at the Foundation
for Shamanic Studies, founded by internationally renowned anthropologist
Dr. Michael Harner.
People ask me, “How do you know if somebody’s a shaman?”
I say, “It's simple. Do they journey to other worlds?
And do they perform miracles?”
